About Us
Design Approach
We specialize in helping people increase the value and beauty of their homes or businesses by designing inviting outdoor spaces inspired by nature. Using weathered boulders, stone accents, ornamental trees, tranquil water features, lush moss, native bushes, delicate ferns and adding a crackling fire pit, we will create your own serene oasis.
Much of the work we do is informed and influenced by Japanese garden design principles. We embrace human-scaled proportion, authenticity, seasonality, borrowed scenery, asymmetry, concealment, discovery and wabi sabi.
Design concepts are presented in the form of hand-drawn sketches, site plans and detailed specifications. Our ultimate goal is to connect people with nature in an artful and impactful way that few designers can match.
Design Execution
Natural Spaces partners with other trusted landscapers, designers and lighting professionals with significant expertise to execute their work. David will be onsite during the construction phase to supervise the job and make subtle real-time adjustments as required. All landscape design work requires fluidity during construction. This approach ensures the finished product meets all parties design expectations and goals.

Founder & Designer
David W. Hill
David is no stranger to the world of thoughtful and creative design. As the Chief Design Officer & Vice President Emeritus for Lenovo’s personal computer and enterprise business groups, David holds more than 60 issued design/utility patents and has garnered more than 200 international design awards. He is most noted for his iconic ThinkPad laptop design leadership, but has demonstrated ability to apply his talents more broadly. Prior to joining Lenovo, he enjoyed a nearly 20 year career at IBM creating many watershed designs. You can read more about David's industrial design career at IBM and Lenovo here.
David holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in design and was recently named a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Kansas for lifetime achievement.
Since stepping down from Lenovo, David founded Natural Spaces Landscape Design LLC combining his lifelong interest in natural environments and design. His passion for landscape design was furthered by dozens of influential excursions to Japan. While there, he immersed himself in culturally significant gardens located in Tokyo, Yokohama and Kyoto. These experiences have served to hone his landscape design skills and to firmly establish his natural approach to creating outdoor spaces.
